SUMMARY:AIARE Level 2+Companion Rescue Jan 16-18\, 2026 Hut Based La Grande
DESCRIPTION:What: For 2026 we are offering a 3-day hut-based AIARE Level 2 Course combined with a Companion Rescue Course at the Buck Creek Hut operated by Eagle Cap Mountain Guides. \nCourse Description\nThe AIARE 2 is a three-day/24-hour course that allows backcountry travelers to advance their decision-making skills in more complicated situations such as being a leader within a small travel group\, traveling in more complicated terrain\, and/or developing a travel plan where resources are scarce. \nThe AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather\, snowpack and avalanche processes\, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. \nWho Should Take this Course\n\n  \n\n\nThe AIARE 2 is a three-day course for those who have taken an AIARE 1 and have had at least a year of backcountry travel experience. The AIARE 2 provides backcountry leaders the opportunity to advance their avalanche knowledge and decision-making skills. \nStudent Learning Outcomes\n\nDifferentiate where specific avalanche hazards exist within the landscape and identify avalanche terrain where consequences may be more severe.\nUse and interpret weather\, snow\, and avalanche observations to locate appropriate terrain prior to entering and while in the field.\nDemonstrate leadership skills within a small team that includes facilitating small group discussions\, promoting appropriate terrain selection\, and utilizing simple risk management strategies.\nImplement a basic forecasting framework that can be used in conjunction with and in the absence of local supporting avalanche information.\n\nPrerequisites\n\nParticipants must have the ability to travel in avalanche terrain.\nAn AIARE 1 Course (strongly recommended) or equivalent Level 1 training is required.\nA winter of practical experience after the Level 1 course is highly recommended before taking the AIARE 2 course.

SUMMARY:Womens Only Snowmobile Clinic Feb 28-March 1 (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:The Wallowa Avalanche Center’s Women’s Snowmobile Riding Clinic will provide a supportive\, skills-based learning environment focused on building confidence\, avalanche safety awareness\, and technical riding ability for female participants. The clinic will be led by experienced instructors\, creating a welcoming space for participants to develop their riding skills. \nSome of the skills covered will include:\nBasic Avalanche Safety Skills: Introduction to avalanche gear (beacon\, probe\, shovel)\, group travel protocols\, and communication strategies for safe riding.\nRiding Position and Balance: Learning proper body positioning\, throttle control\, and weight shifting for stability and control on flat terrain and gentle slopes.\nStarting\, Stopping\, and Turning: Safe starting procedures\, throttle and brake modulation\, low-speed maneuvers\, and effective cornering techniques.\nTerrain Awareness and Route Selection: Reading terrain and snow conditions to avoid hazards\, with an emphasis on staying within ability levels and recognizing avalanche-prone areas.\nTechnical Riding Techniques: Side-hilling\, hill climbing\, downhill descents\, and controlled maneuvers in variable snow conditions.\nStuck Management and Recovery: Techniques for safely freeing a snowmobile from deep snow and assisting others while conserving energy and maintaining safety.\nSidehilling: Master maintaining balance and throttle while traversing across a slope—one of the most important off-trail skills.\nCarving & Turning in Powder: Learn to initiate turns using body weight and throttle rather than steering alone.\n\n\n\n\nCost: $500\nLocation: Catherine Creek snopark (outside of La Grande)\nDuration: Saturday and Sunday\nInstructors: Kelly and Victor McNeil\nRequired equipment: Reliable snowmobile\, DOT-approved helmet\, OR snopark pass\, appropriate backpack to carry beacon\, shovel\, probe\, radio.  (We can loan avy gear to those who need it)\n\nThis 2-day course is tailored for beginner to intermediate riders\, looking to get off the groomed trails and develop confidence in themselves and their machine.  You may already ride in the backcountry\, but still find it hard to get your sled to perform consistently.  Kelly and Victor will work with each rider to better understand how your machine can do the work for you\, while gaining confidence and having fun!  You will need to have a modern mountain sled that is reliable to participate.  Safety is the number 1 priority\, and your instructors will ensure everyone knows how to use their avalanche rescue gear and properly conduct a trailhead check before leaving the snopark.  This is going to be a great clinic for those looking to support other women in an inclusive learning environment.
